Jumpstart - Connect Early

Our History

In the spring of 2008 Dr. Susan B. Neuman, Professor of Educational Studies at the University of Michigan, specializing in early literacy development, was instrumental in bringing together the partnership between the University of Michigan and Jumpstart. Jumpstart was founded in 1993 at Yale University by 15 college students who saw the need for quality early childhood programs for low income and at-risk children as well as creating opportunities for college students to participate in the national service movement through local community service.

Since 1993, Jumpstart has become one of the fastest growing non-profit organizations in the country. For the past four years, Jumpstart has been named one of the top nonprofit organizations in the country by Monitor Group and Fast Company (through the Social Capitalist Awards). Since 2002, our network has grown by 20% each year (on average), nearly tripling the number of children served annually. We now connect thousands of Corps members from colleges and universities with nearly 15,000 children across the nation.
